Tell-Tale Signs That You Are Dealing with a Rogue Mover

1. They low-ball the rest of the competition. Rogue movers will bait you with the lowest hourly rate then prolong the time required to finish the move so your cost ultimately goes up. Best rule of thumb: Ask for a contract with the rates quoted.
2. They are not insured. If your moving company doesn’t have its own insurance and offers to move you without offering you insurance that reflects today’s value, RUN. Run as far as the east is from the west. Getting adequate insurance is a very, very important part of the moving process. It’s your protection from ‘Murphy’s Law’.
3. They do not offer or agree to an on-site inspection of your home and contents and gives an estimate over the phone or Internet. If the estimates sounds too good to be true. It just might be.
4. They demand cash or a large deposit upfront or before the move.
5. They claim all goods are covered by their insurance. It’s important to understand insurance that is being offered. In 1930’s value 0.60 cents/lb was adequate coverage. In those days it could adequately replace your valuables in the event of loss or damage. Not so in today’s world of inflation and price increases. A reasonable coverage is $30/lb to adequately compensate for loss or damage. Be sure to check that you are adequately covered by the mover. (There is an additional charge). Isn’t it better to be safe than sorry?
6. They don’t explain the terms and conditions of your move and don’t provide you with a Bill of Lading

How to Choose the Right Moving Company. Eight Must Do's.

When it comes to Toronto movers, Mississauga movers or Oakville movers not all moving companies are born equal. Some are exceptional. Yep, that’s us…..that’s what our clients say, some movers are good, some are not so and some are downright dishonest.
It takes just one “nasty” incident that might involve the police, a lawyer and the media to make you realize that it is very important to ensure your belongings are in the best possible hands.
No one likes surprises so always ask if you will be required to pay for anything extra over and above the estimate.
So, how do you choose the right moving company for you?
- Ask around. Talk to family, friends, neighbours or co-workers for personal recommendations and warnings. Ask if there is a company they would recommend.
- Most reputable moving companies will have a website with their information. Gather the information you need and make a list of potential movers. Be sure to check out their testimonial section.
- Ask about insurance. Ensure your coverage is at today’s replacement cost.
- Check out review sites for testimonials. If there are message boards use it as a place to post your questions too.
- Contact the Better Business Bureau and find out if any of the companies on your list have generated any report. The report will show complaints filed against the company and how they were resolved. Since no company is perfect, it’s rare that a company will have 100% happy customers. The key is to see how the company handled the complaint and how satisfied the complainant was with the result.
- NEVER USE A MOVING BROKER. If you are unsure, ask if they are a moving company that will actually do the move or if they use brokers. Here’s why it’s a bad idea to use a moving broker – there is no accountability to you plus they can take your business and sell it to the highest bidder. Reputable movers are accountable to you. Brokers are not licensed to do the actual moves so any one can show up on moving day and charge you way more than estimated.
- Take some time to talk with each moving company. It’s a good sign if they take the time to understand your moving needs. Ask questions. If the company representative isn’t friendly and helpful on the phone, call someone else.
- Buyer BEWARE. You usually get what you pay for – right? The lowest hourly rate doesn’t mean you get the best move. (Sadly, the horror stories abound). Professional moving companies will perform your move safely, more efficiently while protecting your treasures. In the long run this saves you money and buys you peace of mind.
It’s always a prudent idea to compare apples with apples. Remember, not all Toronto movers, Mississauga movers or Oakville movers are born equal!
